Matko Smolčić
Bassoon
Matko Smolčić graduated bassoon in the class of Professor Žarko Perišić at the Academy of Music in Zagreb in 2019.
Throughout his schooling, he received additional training at seminars for artists from various fields of music, such as bassoonists Sergio Azzolini and Bence Boganyi, oboist Guy Porat, violinist Catherine Mackintosh, and spent one year at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, in the class of prof. Richard Galler.
In 2019, he won the Young Artist of the Year award given by the International Classical Music Awards jury composed of music critics and media editors from 17 European countries.
As a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, since 2014 he has performed intensively at various music festivals in Croatia and abroad, including the Varaždin Baroque Evenings, Korkyra Baroque Festival, Dubrovnik Summer Festival, Swiss Festival Next Generation, Wien Modern, Vaduz Classic, and Olive Classic, where in 2019 he was also a residential artist.
He collaborates with numerous orchestras and ensembles such as the Croatian Baroque Ensemble, the Cantus Ensemble, the HRT Symphony Orchestra, and the Swiss Esperanza Ensemble.
Since 2016 he has been a member of the reed quintet Kalamos, since 2017 he has been the first bassoonist of the Sinfonieorchester Liechtenstein, and since 2018 he has been the leader of the bassoon section of the Zagreb Philharmonic.
Since 2020, he has also been working as an assistant at the Music Academy in Zagreb.
